I didn't know Flash (Flash 3, when I started) at all before I started my job here at Mondo Media. I learned it on the job working on the early Mondo-Minishows like God & Devil, Thugs On Film and Like News. Now, I do everything in Flash! Even word documents... it's sad, really.
You know, I don't think we've ever drawn any of the crew as an HTF character. Although, I do remember a fan, Gage (I hope I spelled his name right), come to San Diego Con one year and hand me a drawing of myself as a HTF character! It was AWESOME! He even made one for our intrepid sound designer Jim Lively, which is hanging in his studio right now.
To answer your question, Sniffles is voiced by the lovely and talented Liz Stewart! And there's no doubt that Liz is from the female persuasion. She just does a great job at the voice acting that her performance transcends gender.
As for Lippy, yes, he is insane! He's quite the character in real life that we always think of him as a real life cartoon.
Coming up with characters is one of the most fun things we get to do! The short answer is that most of the characters came about because of some of the unique personalities and ideas we came up with that just made us laugh. For example, we thought it would be great to have a carpenter character with no hands and ironically call him "Handy." Then put him in situations where he would need to have hands. That sort of thing just cracks us up!
Cro-Marmot (I always forget how to spell his name too) is in no way a filler character. He's one of my faves because he's so inanimate! Again, this just comes down to what tickles our funny bones and the various situations we can put him in to cause mayhem and comedy. I mean, he's basically a prop that's treated like a character! That idea alone puts a smile on my face!

Voice recording is fun... if you like sore throats! You might not think it's not a dangerous job
but we've had a few near deaths like when we recorded Writer Warren Graff doing Handy in the Shard At Work episode. We've resorted to wearing rain coats after that near drowning. I think Warren still wets himself whenever he sees a glass of water.

If we lived in the world like HTF, I'd be making cartoons about creatures that die horrible deaths and never come back! Where's the fun in that?
